Apollo 13 Modern Marvels History Channel Documentary
Apollo 13 was the seventh manned mission in the American Apollo space program and the third intended to land on the Moon. The craft was launched on April 11, 1970, at 13:13 CST from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, but the lunar landing was aborted after an oxygen tank exploded two days later, crippling the service module upon which the Command Module depended. Despite great hardship caused by limited power, loss of cabin heat, shortage of potable water, and the critical need to jury-rig the carbon dioxide removal system, the crew returned safely to Earth on April 17.The flight was commanded by James A. Lovell with John L. "Jack" Swigert as Command Module pilot and Fred W. Haise as Lunar Module pilot. Swigert was a late replacement for the original CM pilot Ken Mattingly, who was grounded by the flight surgeon after exposure to German measles.Modern Marvels by History Channel explains the accident happen on the spacecraft and crew of Apollo 13 mission. Apollo 13 was in fact the 7th manned mission in the Apollo space program and also the 3rd human lunar landing and exploration on the Moon. The spacecraft was launched on 11th day of April, 1970. The landing had been aborted as a result of an explosion of an oxygen tank a couple of days later, ruining the service module where the Command Module relied on. In spite of serious trouble brought on by reduced power, lack of cabin heat, deficiency of safe and clean water, the Apollo crew came back to Earth safely on April 17.There was clearly problems prior to the launch. Only days earlier, Astronaut Thomas Mattingly had been substituted by Jack Swigert which eventually found out he was exposed to a disease called, German measles, and failed to have the needed antibodies to protect immune system. Briefly prior to launch, an installer discovered that the helium tank has a greater pressure than estimated. Not a thing was carried out regarding it apart from monitoring it.None of the major goals and aims of the Apollo moon mission was completed. The lunar mission was aborted following almost 56 hours of spaceflight because of the failure of module cryogenic oxygen and also the incapability to produce electricity as well as to supply water and oxygen. The brave crew of Apollo 13 made a comeback to our planet safely and securely.
